Amber felt saddened by the girl’s confusion, and even sadder when she dropped the acorn. “Well it’s nice to meet you Eleven,” she told her, still hoping to cheer her up somewhat. Eleven seemed like even an odd nickname, which she assumed it was because she was sure that no parent would ever name their child Eleven. Amber was surprised at the mention of calling Sheriff Hopper for the other girl. She did not think that he had any family. Of course she not only didn’t know much about him, but had never even met him. She’s just heard of him and seen him around a few times, so she figured she just hadn’t known. Amber started to panic, when she was invited to go to the arcade, wondering how she was going to get out of this without seeming suspicious, but then she realized that she did have a good excuse not to go. “Oh, I don’t have any money,” she explained. The downtrodden expression on Eleven's face instantly lifted the second Nancy suggested somewhere fun. She hadn't been bothered by the woods, cold or not, but she was certainly curious about what the older girl would find fun. It was probably different from Mike. People didn't all have the same interests, right?
Or perhaps not.
The suggestion of the arcade wasn't surprising on second thought. Apparently there were only so many fun things a person could do. She nodded in mute agreement until Nancy said they were going to call Hopper. The nod turned into a head shake that pretty clearly spelled out no. She was already in trouble for leaving the cabin. Calling attention to it seemed like just asking for more.
"He only says no," Eleven complained in protest, pursing her lips in a way that suggested this bothered her sensibilities more than it ever stopped her from doing anything. She didn't care that it wasn't safe when staying inside was boring. And, if she was being fair, he didn't always say no. Just enough that it was tiring.
"No money," she echoed Amber's excuse in a puzzled sort of fashion. Even though it was true for her too. She couldn't comprehend why the other girl seemed so panicked about it. Eleven didn't quite understand money yet. Mike had tried to help her, and it'd been explained to her that taking things from a store wasn't okay. But she saw people do it all the time and they didn't get in trouble for it.
